VIDEO INTRODUCTION:

Hi everybody,

The Indian government has been extremely bullish on alternative sources of petrol and diesel for a long time now!! Especially Nitin Gadkari!!

And as Mr Nitin Gadkari constantly points out, crude oil prices keep fluctuating with geopolitical tensions, they are bleeding our foreign exchange reserves, and most importantly, they emit 12% of India's carbon emission!! And this is again causing both pollution and global warming!

But this is where Nitin Gadkari started the next big fuel revolution in India!! And his vision is so optimistic that he says, India will not just stop imports but we will go to become an exporter of Fuel to the world!! And one of the most important instruments of this massive revolution is a fuel that we all know as compressed natural gas or CNG

Now if you are a think school student, you know what this means right??!! What is the government, the government is the godfather of the market, and if the godfather is bullish on something, then it points towards a million dollar business opportunity!!

Infact, if you look at market reports, the share of CNG powered vehicles has been going up from 3.5% of passenger vehicle sales in 2019 to 11% in 2022!! and it's expected to grow to 18% in the next 5 years!!

And, you know what, Bajaj Auto and Maruti Suzuki have done such an incredible job that today, they have a market share of 79% and 75% respectively!! And this market is booming so fast, that Maruti has increased its cng sales by 4 times in the last 6 years. Tata motors wants to make the CNG sales equal to EVs!!! And recently if you saw the news, Bajaj Auto is going to release the World’s first CNG powered bike in India!!

So ladies and gentlemen, we are witnessing not 1 not 2 but 3 automobile revolutions together, which are EVs, Hydrogen and now the CNG revolution.

So, in today’s case study, let’s deep dive and understand

Why is CNG considered to be the next game changing fuel for India?
What has bajaj auto done to be the market leader in this space?
What is the Indian government doing to boost the cng industry in india? And, lastly, for people like you and me, what are the new opportunities in this growing market?

It is not fair to compare prices currently. CNG has low consumption, once it has high consumption, govt will increase taxes and make it costly just like petrol

CNG have a few issues (Saying from Bangladesh where majority cars/three wheelers are run by CNG)
1. Refueling time is quite long for CNG
2. CNG pressure becomes really low during winter
3. CNG Capacity in a vehicle is low and hence it requires more frequent refueling.

And then there's the CNG blast risks.

One important factor of comparatively less CNG cars sell is (not mentioned in video) the Boot space it takes especially hatchback cars of middle class people causing inconvenience for luggage space on long journey

@Ganesh Another Big Reason of people not adopting CNG vehicle is that they feel it's unsafe and a CNG car can blast, it would be great if you share some research on this also.

Biggest drawback of CNG vehicles from the user perspective is a lackluster performance. Put 5 people in a car and run it on the highway and ghat sections, you'll feel the engine struggling to perform like a petrol and diesel car. So CNG intrigues only to those people, who are buying entry level cars like Alto, Celerio and WagonR and are super budget conscious. But if we look at the market trends, car buying habits in India are changing. Earlier cars like Alto and Celereo used to dominate the charts, but today we see even ₹15 - ₹20L cars like Creta and Scorpio N in the top 5. And those customers won't like a lackluster performance at that price.

Inconsistency in the price of CNG is a major turnoff. In MP it is 93/kg

Negative of CNG : fire and safety record .
Price difference of CNG and petrol is very narrow in most of states

I think the 17000(incorrect number) CNG stations by 2030 is a lazy target. I think we have to push it to range of 30000-40000 stations. I want to see this revolution to pick a massive leap. Thank you @Think School for this amazing information.

I also particularly worked on commercial Vehicles development in CNG sector.
Make a video on biogas and bio CNG promoted by Nitin Gadkari to replace fuels importing from other countries. Pilot projects are started in Vidarbha belt. This can be the ultimate disrupter and H-CNG( liquid hydrogen mixed CNG) Engines are also in the development phase at ARAI.

We are way behind the European & American standards, better late then never. But our Indian Government needs to push for energy alternatives seamlessly, currently we are lagging behind a bit. By 2028, atleast 35 - 50% of vehicles should go with alternatives. My city, Vijayawada, RTC buses fleet & all autorickshaws are ran 100% by CNG since 2005.
