I started off in 1998 when audio software was just starting to creep out. So for the first 10 years I was 100% in the box. Later I got the Access Virus, and the JP8080 and the quality of my trance was tripled. Now? VSTs can easily get you there but I still have 19 hardware synths. Sometimes analog is just better, other times it's not necessary. If you are on a budget, all you need is a computer, a mic, a keyboard, an interface, and a good set of cans, with maybe 2-3 subscriptions for plugins and you hit the ground running. Hardware synths are a luxury, but sometimes they can set you apart from your competition due to the uniqueness and character of it

I prefer to get scammed and give companies my money for hardware that I make music with because something something I don't know what I am doing blah blah cause Espen said so.
