In 1870s Yorkshire, Annie Quaintain (Jessica Raine, Call the Midwife, Agatha Christie's Partners in Crime), a recently widowed mother, is forced to sell her house and possessions to pay off her late husband's debts. Penniless and shunned by society, Annie and her two children set out for Culverdale Valley, where an enormous railway viaduct is being built. She sets up a lodging house in Jericho, a lawless shanty town full of rough and rowdy workers.

it was an interesting series. but the lead actor had one expression. he always looked like he was about to cry. i couldnt figure out what about his face made him look like that, but it spoiled his otherwise good looks. & i would have preferred a tougher attitude. for someone who left luxury for a hard life for years, he came off as soft. & esp in those times, if you were to survive hardships, you had to be tough & your attitude would show it. i just watched BILLY THE KID on prime & actor tom blyth played it perfect.
