I feel bad for Penny's mom. It's easy to criticize her for being overly fixated on the opinions of others. But given that she's from a small town in Nebraska, I can basically guarantee that a) her family's troubles are talked about all the time by a horde of judgmental busy-bodies, and b) as the mom, she is likely blamed for all of it. Being surrounded by that your whole life is going to make you neurotic and deeply concerned about how you are perceived by others...
