You explained Gauss Jordan elimination, or tri-diagonalization of a matrix very nicely.

GJ elimination is how most computer programs reduce a set of linear equations.

Once you do things this way, you will never go back to doing substitution again ... well, except for 2x2 matrices. Then, the Cramer rule is probably faster.
