Youtube: LBCF Chapter 28 - Ang Ordinansa ng Bawtismo (24-Oct-2021 Pastor Jeremiah)
Study Series: 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith
Baptism is an ordinance of the New Testament, ordained by Jesus Christ, to be unto the party baptized, a sign of his fellowship with him, in his death and resurrection; of his being engrafted into him;1 of remission of sins;2 and of giving up into God, through Jesus Christ, to live and walk in newness of life.3
Rom. 6:3-5; Col. 2:12; Gal. 3:27
Mark 1:4; Acts 22:16
Rom. 6:4
Introductory Observations:
- Ordinance of the NT not OT
- Reminiscent of the ch. 28 where ordinances are positive and sovereign institution
- Not practiced in the OT
- It suggests important principle of biblical interpretation - NT ordinances understanding should not be derived primarily from the OT.
- Important question: Who should be baptized?
- The recepient: those who repent and profess faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
- Ordinances are pictures of saving grace
- Contra paedobaptists:
A. RCR: Sacramentalism - Infused faith - saving grace (forgiveness and washing away of original) conveyed thru infant baptism. Since God's grace was deposited to the Roman church which she can dispose thru the sacraments.
B. Presbyterian: Argument from Covenants - parallelism of circumcision and baptism - points to same reality - removal of filth and sin.
Paragraphs Outline:
1. Spiritual Significance
2. Appropriate Subjects
3-4. Proper Manner
- Baptism is a sign (ex. a gold medal is a sign of the reality being a champion)
- We are not baptized to be saved but a visible sign of invisible reality.
- It points to the reality of Christ's finished work for the believer.
- It is a picture of saving grace.
- It does not convey saving grace.
- It is a visual illustration of justification.
- It reminds us of God's kindness.
- It is one of the means of grace.
