In this video we go hands on with iPadOS 16. We take a look at the new weather app, improvements to the files app, and the new multitasking UI called Stage Manager which now supports external displays. Stage manager requires an iPad model with the M1 chip.

It will take another 16 years to get a calculator.

Hopefully sometime in the future, though it might be a distant future, maybe when the M5 is released and has 32 cores with a GPU that runs at 35-TFLOPS, maybe then we will finally see a default calculator app. I believe in you Apple! You can do it!

Sadly, my 2 year old 2020 iPad Pro doesn’t support stage manager.

Stage Manager seems like a perfect compromise for empowering the iPad to deliver a laptop like experience without stepping on the toes of the MacBook. Great work and great first look.

6:20 Yeah I definitely agree. I have an iPad Pro with an A12Z chip which I bought late 2020. I don’t understand why that doesn’t support this I think it’s capable enough

The fact that it’s limited to M1 devices makes me sad.

I have an iPad 8th gen (that's all I can afford) and all I got from this iPad OS 16 update are essentially the new lock screen WITHOUT the customization and the weather app WITHOUT the stage manager!

Wow ipad pro 4 generation is not even too old. And left the stage manager out on the that one. Very well!

This actually makes my iPad Pro (Max) a productivity tool as long as the software rises to the occassion. I, too, have a MBP so don’t know when I’ll connect to external monitors. However, I can see a near future where I don’t take my MBP with me and just use the iPad Pro with an external monitor in a business center or customer site.

The most useful review I’ve seen coming out of Apple’s recent conference. Nice job.

Wish stage manager was open to all iPads, especially iPad mini. Great external display feature. Finally matching external display aspect ratio

I think the stage manager is poorly implemented because all the apps are floating windows which is an inefficient use of space. iPads already have limited screen estate so floating windows + visible dock + other windows, leave little space for the apps you actually care about.

What they should have done is just built on top of the existing multitasking feature. Have it so resizing slides are seemless and don't snap in giving us finer control of the size and allow more than 2 windows to be open. Up to four, one for each corner.

really would like support for more iPads, as my pro is just fine, and im not sure i wanna spend 600 bucks to upgrade to the new pro as the chip is the only real difference but this is a nice quality of life upgrade. Curious how this pans out as the beta matures. I was hoping to get some of the iOS lock screen tweaks but maybe next year?

if you have a macbook pro 14 would you consider using this better than your mac OS?? still a media consumption device except you are into drawing with the pencil

Disappointed that we're not getting a Dex type feature. Until then, the iPad isn't going to replace a computer :(
Come on Apple...

I will consider an iPad a computer replacement when it gets a real file system
