Rare Encounter: Documenting the Spot-Bellied Eagle Owl's Chick Mr Sugar Candy's Journey in its Habitat

We embark on an extraordinary journey as we witness and document the rare and fascinating moments of the Spot-Bellied Eagle Owl's Cute Chick Growing process. My adventure begins deep within the heart of the forest, where the Spot-Bellied Eagle Owl has chosen a secluded spot to raise its chick. The dense foliage provides the perfect cover for this elusive owl species, making the discovery even more special.

We have known this bird as the “Spot-bellied eagle”. The scientific name of this bird is “Bubo Nipalensis” and regionally known by the names like “Devil Owl” or “Forest-eagle Owl”. Though the physical appearance of this bird is similar to the common wild owls, two of the horn-like structures present on its head, makes it look more scary. Also, the sound created by this bird is different from the hooting sound of other wild owls. It is more likely the screaming or crying sound of a lady and is audible upto 3-6 seconds, and holds a totally soundless flight. It makes nests in deep dark forests among tall trees (40ft-50ft) which makes it extremely difficult for humans to spot it.

A wonderful bird that carried a great emotional story from years in Indian myth, it's a dream to many wildlife storytellers to see the majestic bird but it's not easy to sight this bird with open eyes.

There is a famous story shared by the localoids of Sri Lanka regarding this Eagle-owl, believed to be taken from the “Mahakavya of Sri Lanka”. It is briefly stated as follows:

Once there was a king in a village, somewhere is Srilanka. He was very brave and powerful. Other kings of the nearby villages and areas were afraid of facing a battle with him and hence they used to give him some of their lands and jewels as gifts, to keep him satisfied. But he was so greedy and arrogant, and decided to move out of his palace with his army to conquer new places, in some other kingdoms. He left his newly wedded wife in his palace and started his journey. After some days he conquered some of the nearby lands, won many battles, expanded the border of his own kingdom and came back to his palace. There he got the joyful news of his queen’s pregnancy. He announced a grand ceremony for the queen’s baby-shower and performed some royal rituals. But he was in a dilemma till the end, if it is his child or not. While he was struggling in between his thoughts and doubts, the queen gave birth to a baby boy. With the arrival of the prince, the wave of happiness spreaded all around the king’s palace. But the king has started doubting his queen more and more, with each day passing by.

On one fine day, the king went to meet his queen and invited her for dinner and told her that he would prepare everything for the dinner. The queen got amazed with the king’s lovely words and dressed up nicely and got ready to meet him. The king served all the food he had prepared, after the queen arrived there for the dinner. The queen was happy with the surprise and enjoying the delicious food. Suddenly she found one finger on her dinner plate and screamed with fear. The king said to her that it’s the finger of the new-born baby. He had doubts that it was not his child, and was not ready to accept him as the prince, hence he had killed the baby. The queen was totally heartbroken and cursed the king. She said that the people will always hear her screams even after her death. She ran away from the palace towards the forest and committed suicide by jumping down from a hill. It is believed that the spirit of the queen had entered into the body of this bird and it makes the screeming sound in deep forests. Thus the bird holds the name “Devil Owl”.
