They could easily get away with it if they were smarter: they could also cough randomly, not only when he reads the answers out loud. He would know it's just random coughs and no one else would suspect anything. But when they cough ONLY when he reads the correct answer, no surprise it was suspicious

He didn't do this in a clever way. It was an absolutely stupid way. The idiot coughing should've been the one sitting in the seat, not the 'major'. Take it from someone who has worked with criminals, their approach was ridiculous.
