How to Use Pendant Lights

Learn how to decorate your home with pendant lights. Mandi Gubler, blogger and DIY junkie, shares really easy DIY projects and decorating ideas with pendant lights for your home! She’s talking about one of her all-time favorite things to decorate with: pendant lighting. Changing out lighting is an easy home update, and pendants are an instant focal point. Here are my design rules for rocking the look. Ok, rule #1: Find a look you love. Pendant lights come in so many options, so you can really have fun with it. Are you more into exposed bulbs? Like a simple and industrial set, which she would love to cluster together. Or do cool materials and shapes, like a Moravian star or a set of pretty blue mason jars, make more of a statement to you? Rule #2: Make sure the pendant light is the right size. Here’s a design secret: Measure the room’s length and width, and add both of those numbers. The diameter in feet is the size the light should be in inches. For example, this room is 10 by 15 feet. 10 + 15 = 25 so the light should be about 25 inches wide. Rule #3: Hang it at the correct height. Pendants come with long cords, so you can adjust how low or high the light hangs. Make sure the bottom of the pendant is higher than the tallest person who would be walking underneath (about seven feet). If you anchor a coffee table below the light, then you can hang it lower, but you’ll want to be mindful of what the space is being used for. No one wants a pendant blocking their view of the big game. Always hang pendant lights at least 36-48 inches above table or countertops. Any lower and you’ll block people’s eye line or risk bumping your head. The light itself should be about half the width of the table. If you go with a set, there should be an equal amount of space between each of the pendant lights in a row. So make sure you measure before hanging! Rule #4: Don’t be afraid to get creative! In place of lamps on a nightstand, a pendant light on a dimmer switch creates the perfect amount of lighting. Plus, for a small space like this, a hanging pendant means more room on the nightstand. We love pendants in the kitchen, but they work in virtually any room. There are so many pendant light options, you can really have fun with the different sizes, colors, and materials.
