Periodontal Disease: A Genetic Perspective

The pathogenesis of periodontal disease results from the multifactorial and complex interaction between infection and host response. In addition, genetics is shown to play a role in damaging the inflammatory and immune responses of the host tissues during periodontal conditions. With the help of new technologies, such as microarrays and DNA sequencing, it is possible to identify specific genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors that influence periodontitis susceptibility. However, in order to apply these techniques for better management of periodontal disease, having sound knowledge of genetic determinants and safe modulation/control of host response becomes essential.
