Marketplace exposes a broken home care system that's failing families and workers. Our investigation reveals a system with few checks and balances and secrecy around for-profit companies' use of public funds. Plus, we travel to Denmark with geriatric physician Dr. Samir Sinha to show Canadians a better, more dignified and more affordable way to provide care at home.

I am the female PSW in this story. Unless the families and the general public demands that the government overhauls the broken system, it will remain as it is. I implore you to write to your MP's.

Thank you for exposing this, this is our life as Homecare, too little money for a difficult job, agency getting lot of money not the PSW who did a very difficult job

As a Bayshore employee, one time they canceled a two hour visit for me and gave me a 10 hour visit because they would get paid more. They did not care about the client that has shorter visit because it was not in their best interest. Disgusting

I hope this program blows up and all higher executives for these companies get fired and charged. Also, the Ontario government should focus less on nursing homes and more of at home care and get follow Denmark.

This marketplace series is showing so many broken systems that older generations just blindly assume work

I left the field as a PSW after 10yrs. I loved my job but it was just too demoralizing. You’re used up and spit out, just like the clients. And this was before COVID hit! Now PSWs and other field staff are literally putting their lives at risk and the companies and Canadian govt you work for still don’t care about you. I switched to work behind the scenes in scheduling and the problems are exactly the same. It scares me to think what I’ll have to do to make sure I have care when I’m a senior

So much gratitude to Psw’s who do this for the clients.
They receive heat from the families irritated by not getting proper care.

Also the unreasonable expectations from the company’s they work for.

You get into this profession because you have a heart to help people.

They end up being burnt out in many cases on both ends.

My heart goes out to the people needing good care.
My strength and support goes out to the good hearted Psw’s working as hard as they can for the clients.

Better companies will come out and hopefully the current companies get their acts together.

I worked as a PSW and suffered burnout after awhile you don't even get much support from your own agency, sometimes time is not enough while some clients/family pretend there's more time to do task but in reality you're already out of time. But yes, some workers come late and leave early while had to complete or exceed the time frame because wanted to finish my job before leaving.

That’s exactly what I’m experiencing with my mom. She’s 93, bed ridden 24/7. Depressing and frustrating.

PSWs should get paid more and the system should not be for profit - I feel for the PSWs and the care recipients.
