The real trick here is the left hands position
In case1: the left hand is resting on the table so the screwdriver is fixed and the momentum is transferred to the the potato n it moves down

Case2: the left is not supported on table so the screwdriver is movable and it takes up the momentum while the potato does not due to its inertia hence screwdriver moves down and potato moves up.

The reason potato moving upward is that when he's hitting the screwdriver it is moving downward very slowly and potato tries to be at rest (law of inertia ) and we feel like potato is moving upward but it's the other way around.
