"What's New?," a torch song originally composed as an instrumental in 1939 by Bob Haggart & titled "I'm Free," later had lyrics added by Johnny Burke.
The song was retitled using the song's first line, "What's New?". Andre Previn recorded it with his orchestra for his 1961 Columbia LP, Thinking of You. Andre Previn is perhaps best known as a conductor of classical music, but in the 1950s and early 1960s he was one of the best jazz pianists in the world. During the years 1958-1962, he produced some classic jazz albums with a string orchestra, including Thinking of You. Unfortunately the album is only available on vinyl.

The whole album “Thinking of you” has such wonderful titles. To know that it went from “what’s new” to “I’m free” & then hearing Linda Rhondstadt sing the lyrics put to the music. Beautiful. It’s almost magical. I wonder if she ever sang it on a birthday? Thank you for such a wonderful compilation! Oh, to have real life follow suit, I’d imagine that would be magical.

Andre Previn does a great job on this recording. I usually watch his appearance on the British show where they trick him to appear…and he shows he can also do comedy…😂🎉!
Have a Happy New Year!🎊
