“When you are born disabled without arms or legs or missing body parts in Afghanistan, you are considered hopeless.”

Meet Abbas Karimi, a Para athlete refugee who did not want to be defined by the barriers put up in front of people with disabilities in his native Afghanistan. He now hopes to join the Refugee Paralympic Team to make his dreams true at Tokyo 2020.

The International Paralympic Committee's vision is to make for an inclusive world through Para sport. Our mission is to lead the Paralympic Movement, oversee the delivery of the Paralympic Games and support members to enable Para athletes to achieve sporting excellence.

I heard your interview yesterday on NPR. Amazing interview. I so admire your courage, determination and positive attitude and your efforts in competing in these Olympics. Your courage and resilience are amazing. Your family/friends must be so proud. I wish you every success both in the Olympics and throughout your life/future. You are an inspiration to many who feel that competing while disabled is just too much to take on. You did it and your incredible perseverance and great attitude are sure to help you achieve great things. Well done.
