MusicWorks - Grade 3
The stunning artwork of Georgia O'Keeffe is no more apparent than in her famous 1921 painting entitled Blue and Green Music. Fittingly commissioned by the Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (O'Keeffe's birthplace), Samuel Hazo does an amazing job of portraying subtle as well as bold colors into musical terms. Based on a single theme that is manipulated and varied throughout, the piece progresses from delicate mallet percussion effects up to climactic impact points for the entire ensemble. O'Keeffe explained her idea that “music could be translated into something for the eye.” And Mr. Hazo succeeds wonderfully in translating it back into something for the ear!

I played the vibraphone for this piece in high school and my school's band went to Canada to perform in a competition and I realized I left my music in the US. It's a good thing I memorized my part... either way this is an emotional piece.

I get that motifs build of the lion's share of all good music, but every time I hear this I can't get over have a four note gesture could build this gorgeous music.

Played this in High School as a junior, now I'm lucky enough to be writing a research paper on this work in college.

This is a very mature piece for bands who like rushing and playing fast music, and if they can play this piece, they are truly skilled.

throughout my 6 years of being a percussionist, (which i still am) my band director decided that i should play tuba for 1 song, and it was this song. I picked it up pretty quick and i practiced everyday to get better and better, and i have to say i love having an alternate instrument!!!
