Each pendulum swing cycle is directly related to the length of the string holding it. This is part of an overall effect called simple harmonic motion. The shorter the string, the faster the pendulum motion. The strings are graded at just the right lengths to have the balls swinging at slightly different rates which is enough to cause the snakey illusion.

Thats because the Period of a pendulum is dependent on gravity and length of the pendulum.
Here, gravity is constant and length varies.

They are all going the same pattern. Left right left right but the taller ones go faster than the ones nearest the bottom. Have a look. All they are really doing, is swinging back and fourth.
