In this video, I provide an overview of China's Belt and Road Initiative projects. I provide examples of the particular type of infrastructure projects being built (ports, bridges, roads, rail lines, tunnels, dams and pipelines). I also discuss the many problems that have been associated with these projects for both China and the countries where these projects have been built.

Keep in mind, Belt and Road Initiative projects use Chinese companies, engineers, workers, steel, technology, logistics, subcontractor, etc. This means that a lot of the loan is actually returned to China in the form of payments during the construction of the project.
PS — Additionally, these countries are locked into China for maintenance and parts for decades going forward. So not a bad deal for China.

The USA spent 5.3 trillion dollars on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and will soon exceed 1 trillion for disabled veterans from those conflicts. The USA spends money, but has very little to show for it. We do not even have high speed rail in the highly populated parts of the nation.

For years I’ve been wondering about Chinese constructions within Africa; this video helped me understand it more, and much more about international political implications. Thanks & Happy New Year, Casey.

In unrelated news, the technical report regarding the Carola bridge in Dresden has been published some days ago. The failure was the result of pervasive hydrogen embrittlement of the tensioning steel. The whole bridge is terminally affected, steel cracked like glass when they took samples. Any reopening to traffic, even with limited loads, is strongly advised against. So, all remaining parts of the bridge will need to be torn down. Pillars and foundations can't be re-used as some of those suffer from severe corrosion, too.

Hambatota Port, is one if the best deals, but its been highly propagandize. By 2016 Sir Lanka debt to china was only 10% of it total debt. 90% was to other western institution. There was never a deal to exchange money for the Port, The new government just decided to offer Concention which a Chinese company paid 1.6 billion dollars . Which was used to pay Europe bond creditors.. its a sad to see the level of ignorance.

You think that is bad? You should see what it is like trying to do anything in CA, i.e. the failed train system from San Fran to LA.

Cobalt is no longer required for BEV batteries and the price of cobalt has collapsed over last two yrs, but the price is highly volatile anyway.

Compared to borrowing from IMF and World Bank their is no comparison. When did the USA invest capital to do a capital build for a developing country. . Suggest your listeners follow The New Atlas, Brian Berletic. Peace

"Made In China" is one thing when I see it on my Walmart /Amazon crap. But bridges, hydroelectric dams, and cargo ports? What could go wrong? It sounds like many countries are finding out.

It is because the governments that take the money put it in their pockets not into the project it is meant for. It is hard to complete a project when all the money is gone.

Ditto on the thumbs up for Peter Frankopan's book, The Silk Road. I found it incredibly eye opening!

Even if it's a failure, It's better than spending it on foreign wars. Afghanistan and Iraq is 4-6 trillion and only created death and hate. That's the ultimate failure...Sorry to bring it to the comment section but it needs to be said. Love the videos!!

The best that can be said is that the initiative surveyed and roughed in routes that can be built out with properly constructed projects in the future.
