Loved John's Greased Lightning, Detroit Diesel (2 cycle) powered RED.... the First Diesel powered Rear Engine Digger. If I remember right, he ran a best with it of 7:21et at 178 mph....That, was back in the 1970's!! He was running a V6 Series 53 Detroit Diesel (53 ci per cyl = 318ci) which he somehow reduced to 270 ci. Not sure what he did to accomplish that, seeing as how the there are fixed ports in the cylinder liners for the cylinder scavenging and intake from the roots blower, and with the exhaust valves (4 per cyl.) nearly fully opened by the time the top of piston uncovers the top of the intake ports on it's down-stroke.

Anyway, it was making 1, 800 hp "on the bottle" and 1050hp+/- Before he added "gas" to it. He was running a B&J planetary 2 speed with T/F hardware from there to the wheels... he once told me that it was breaking more parts (driveline.. not the engine) than his fuelers (2) were at the time, which is why he parked it up on the shelf in his shop... where I believe, it still sits to this day. It also ran Very clean with almost zero smoke... like Gale Banks' RED with the Duramax.
