I taught a kid from a Japanese family a gazillion years back. They were very traditional and had only been here about a year. Despite my being really young they were very humble to me as they honoured teachers. They asked if they should send their kid to a special school for children with learning problems as he was dim. His last teacher I knew as being very strict and was very hard on him. I insisted their child was normal, and they should meet me in three months.

I made him my project. I completely backed off, letting him draw pictures in maths and write three word stories in English. I always said his work was good when I passed his desk....

It worked!
One day I asked the class a maths question and his hand shot up. I nodded at him and he gave the right answer. His writing was careful and correct, he became attentive, and made his first close friend, then more. He was no longer alone at playtimes.
He'd clearly been in shock from having a stern teacher, and his parents, put pressure on him whilst he didn't know our language or culture.
My approach was right for him, and I was very proud. Meeting his parents again was lovely. They were so worried but did what I advised and now saw him improve.

I hope he went on to do well and be happy. It was my best success in the few years I worked teaching children. I left the profession permanently as I didn't like the politics and ridiculous workload, but remember only him as my triumph.

I'm so glad he wasn't sent to a school for special needs. He was very intelligent.

Even if he reads this he won't know who I'm talking about as I've changed details. I never break confidentiality!

😂 As an Asian mom, this made me laugh so hard ❤ but I actually was a pretty laid back Asian mom except for grades. Always told my daughter, in a fairly joking manner as she is harder on herself than I could ever be, that we were "A"sians, not "B"asians 😂

Whenever I watch things like this, I wonder if my family is secretly Asian because that “non-Asian” household is bewildering to me as well
