Örvarsson grew up in Akureyri, a small town in northern Iceland, where his musical talent was evident early. At age five, a relative noticed his aptitude and offered music lessons, which he eagerly pursued. In his teens, he played in a professional theater ensemble and was a member of the Icelandic rock band Sálin hans Jóns míns, earning several gold and platinum records. Seeking to broaden his horizons, he studied film scoring at Berklee College of Music in Boston and later earned a master’s degree at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Örvarsson moved to Los Angeles to pursue film composing, working alongside notable figures like TV composer Mike Post and Hans Zimmer. His early credits include contributing to major films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Angels & Demons, The Holiday, and Man of Steel (with Zimmer). His solo film scores include Vantage Point (2008), The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017), Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020), and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013). On television, he has composed for series like Chicago Fire (over 200 episodes), Defending Jacob, and Law & Order franchises

For Silo, Örvarsson crafted a gripping, emotionally charged score that reflects the show’s claustrophobic underground setting and themes of isolation and hope. He recorded sounds in an actual decommissioned missile silo in Iceland to capture authentic ambiances, using instruments like piano, solo violin, and a magnetic resonator piano to evoke loneliness and a futuristic edge. His main title theme, which evolves from a mechanical hum to a dynamic orchestral piece, has been praised for its ability to balance intimate human drama with the vast scope of the silo’s world. The score earned him a BAFTA TV Craft Award in 2024 and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Composition for the episode “Freedom Day.”
