I was 40 when this came out. At the time I was struggling psychologically and emotionally. I used to drive for hours to nowhere in my car alone listening to this song over and over and tears would run down my face. I feel like this song helped me get through some rough times. To this day tears still flow anytime I hear this song, no matter where I am or who I'm with. It is incredible how much this song has meant to so many. Thank you Tracy.

Send this to space to represent humanity if there's other life.

This is a masterpiece. No one makes this kind of music anymore. The storyline of the song is so deep.

My mother struggled to take care of me and my siblings for most of our childhood. One of my core memories was her playing this whole album while she studied for college exams, 4 years straight, just to try and make a better life for us because my father was never in the picture... And she absolutely did. Tracy Chapman will always have a spot in my heart.

I had the honour of meeting this woman while she was still busking in Harvard. One of the most beautiful and purely sheer souls. Respect ❤

I was a heroin addict. I've been clean 6 years. A girl I was with was also an addict. I remember listening to this with her one time when we were broke and had nowhere to go. Unfortunately, I had to make a decision to get clean. I had to leave her or I was going to die. She wasn't ready. She ended up overdosing and passed. This makes me think how hopeless things were and how grateful I am I was able to get clean. My heart does ache for her sometimes.

My mom passed in October of 2019. She singlehandedly raised me and my older sister. She carried our family from poverty to middle class. She took all that weight on her shoulders and thrived. She loved this song and it always will make me remember riding in the car with her. I love you, Mom. Thank you for everything.

If music is meant to represent the truth behind the human condition, this is about as good as it gets.

I was 21 and took my driver's license test. When I got in the driver's seat, this song started playing on the radio. This is a very, very rare song to be playing on radio in my country. But i passed with flying colours. The song relaxed me and got rid of my nervousness. I will always appreciate and cherish this song. Much love from Romania.

The line "leave tonight or live and die this way" was one of the things that helped push me out of the trap house I was living in

My mom and I used to listen to this song when we were homeless and I was young, she would cry and I just didn't understand the song at the time. We made it out of the struggle and are blessed ❤️ this song gives me all the feels.

For some unknown reason, the chorus always brings me to the brink of tears or actual tears stream down my face. I've listened to this song on and off since 1988, since my mom played this cassette every day. There will never be another Tracy Chapman in the history of the universe.

I came from a house of an abusive alcoholic drug addicted father who reigned hell on me and my mother and brother. He went to prison for shooting someone when i was young and came back into my moms life afterwards. He ended up dying in prison of a drug overdose. I have found my bother dead twice and saved his life, i wasnt there the 3rd time but luckily my mom was. Life is hard and people dont get it. He is repeating the same steps his father before him did. It sounds like a cliche but its tragically true. This song rings so true to me. Sorry for the paragraph. Just please know that whoever feels this that you are not alone.

My father was addicted to heroin my whole life, I had to take care of him until he recently overdosed & passed away, he was sober for 3 years so his passing shocked me. I found him dead, slouched over in an alley he used to frequent. This song will always touch me and remind me to have hope, even when you have nothing and want to just give up. 🙏🏻

Edit: thank you all for your kind comments💕💕

For anyone that is struggling in or near the poverty line with all the associated problems that comes with it, whether they are poor or homeless, working class, struggling with debts, facing eviction, etc this is the anthem of hope for you. Amazing song that is beautifully written and performed, of which’s meaning is still relevant today and everyday just as it was at the time of it’s original release…

I can't think of another song that would manage to tell a long, complex story so effectively. It's like a great novel sung in just under 5 minutes
