Jupp Heynckes' Real Madrid of 1997/98

1997/98 was the first time in nearly 30 years that Real Madrid won the European Cup. Jupp Heynckes was their manager back then, and he was only in charge for one season. But it could be argued his one season paved the way for Real Madrid’s European domination.

How did his Madrid team play? Alex Stewart finds out.

Jupp heynckes is the most underappreciated manager, won a European cup with madrid and innumerable trophies with bayern, don't know why we don't often mention him in the bracket of the greatest managers

It's a shame he got sacked at Real, forever a Bayern legend.

I remember Seedorf fouling Edgar David's every time he touched the ball, even though they great friends from Ajax

I think a lot of people have forgotten how good a player Redondo was. He was an absolutely exceptional deep lying playmaker but also just an all round brilliant, intelligent, footballer. I think his
many injuries perhaps diminished his legacy a bit. As a Blackburn fan, I love Henning Berg, but I imagine he still wakes up in a cold sweat when he remembers Redondo nut megging with one of the greatest megs of all time at Old Trafford! (It’s on YouTube, worth watching it!)

As a Bayerfan but football fan in general Jupp Heynckes is one of the best coaches of all time. He basically was the pioneer of Gegenpressing, his achievements at top clubs and his man management were absolutely superb. Don Jupp !

People nowadays say that Klopp is the best exponent of Gegenpressing but, Jupp Haynckes did it 23 years

Had that one fantastic season with the club yet, Jupp Heynckes will forever be remembered by Real Madrid and Madridistas❤️

It's interesting that Real basically won their three CL titles at that time almost with three completely different teams. I'd even go so far to say that Heynckes' team (mostly the squad he inherited from Capello) was actually more spectacular overall than the 'galacticos' (who didn't actually win that many titles) later: a former world champion as goalie (Illgner), a coming world champion (Karembeu) and the topscorer at the World Cup that summer (Suker), plus another future world champion (Roberto Carlos). Mijatovic and Redondo were at their peak, Raúl was on the rise, Hierro and Sanchis were club legends. Panucci and Seedorf, despite being quite young, even had already won the Champions League before as established players at Milan and Ajax. That's quite a solid squad.
