Mosaic crochet is great for all skill levels and can be used to create many different things. Suggestions for various projects are below.
Suggested starting chains for various projects - counts include +4 at end:
Baby blanket: 124 chains depending on yarn size used
Place mats: 84 chains
Table Runner: 68 chains for total width of table runner, you will then work the repeats to obtain the total length for your table.
Throw blanket : 164 chains
Tote or Throw Pillow: 68 chains depending on yarn size used and desired size, create 2 and seam together
Makeup or Notions bag: 36, create 2 and sew together or see in the round info below
Scarf: 36 chains depending on yarn size used and desired width. I recommend size 3 light weight yarn or smaller for garments.
Shawl: 84 chains (working by chaining total width and then you will repeat design until total length is achieved)
IN THE ROUND- Slip stitch to first chain and you must work into that first stitch following the repeat given in the video IN THE ROUND IS WORKED IN THE MULTIPLE ONLY, YOU DO NOT ADD 4 STITCHES TO CHAIN COUNT:
Makeup or Notions bag/ Clutch: 64 chains
Throw Pillow: 20" to 24" depending on yarn size used, tension and hook: chain 88
Cup Coozie or Candle band: 32 chains using size size 4 yarn is suggested
Bag or Tote: 128 chains for large tote/bag
Treat bags/Mini gift bags: 32 to 48 chains
You can create any project you like from Mosaic Crochet, these are just a few suggestions!
I recommend using the below hook sizes depending on yarn used:
3 DK yarn : 3.25mm to 4.5mm
Size 4 Medium/worsted weight: 4.5mm to 5mm.
Mixing 3 & 4 weight: 3.5mm to 4.5mm
THE YARN: I'm using size 3 weight yarn, any brand will work as well as any size.
***This is not an affiliate link but it does get you $5 off your first order with them!
Note on mixing yarn sizes 3 (DK) & Size 4 (Medium Worsted weight): THE TRICK TO MIXING YARN SIZES IS JUST KEEPING YOUR TENSION EVEN AND USING THE SMALLEST SIZE HOOK RECOMMENDED FOR THE SMALLER YARN! You can use any yarn size you like and can use yarn that is all the same size, you do not have to mix yarn sizes.
Project info and starting:
To begin your project you will chain in multiples of 8 plus 4 at the end to work a flat piece. You will skip the first chain and begin working in the second chain from the hook, ending up with an odd number of stitches. EXAMPLE: I chained 20 and had 19 stitches at the end of my first Foundation Row.
TO WORK IN THE ROUND: chain in multiples of 16 and slip stitch to the first chain. begin working the repeat in the first stitch [same stitch you slip stitches into) and follow the Repeat as given in the video.
