For me, it wasn't the controls. It was more level design that made me so frustrated. There is so much bullshit design in that game. I love how how the game feels to move.

After playing the game on All-Stars, I dug out my old GameCube and played it again on original hardware with original disc and controllers. The experience was exactly the same. It was always this bad. We were just dumb kids.

I feel so validated hearing this. I tried playing this game for myself after one of my friends swore it was his favorite Mario game. But i couldn't even bring myself to get a second shine. I got such a headache trying to control Mario

That's real. The controls are pure jank and the camera feels like an enemy half the time. It's made much worse by all the different bullsh*t time challenges. Especially after Mario Odyssey came out, you can instantly tell how most of the movement in Sunshine is just the older, more terrible version of everything they finally got right in Odyssey.

My main problem is the progression, every other 3d mario game you progress by the number of collectables you have, but here you specifically need the first 7 shines of every world, meaning everything else is useless outside of 100%, blue coins, secret stars and all. It also doesn't communicate this at all, again, the other 3d games give you an exact number of what you need, sunshine doesn't say anything so you just end up wasting time on useless shines unless you go for 100%, which it seems like most people don't even want to do, I know I don't feel like hunting for blue coins until I inevitably give up and either just look them up or drop the game.

Sunshine has that loveable jank for me that I can’t hate it. Will never go for 100% tho, wouldn’t wish that on anyone

The thing about Sunshine's controls is that the game does control extremely well...after you've reached a certain skill floor. Which is not something you would ever think about having to deal with in a Mario game of all things. Before you hit that skill floor, the game just doesn't feel good. This isn't a "get gud" post, by the way, even though it most probably definitely seems like one.

This is the truest thing I ever heard. I love the game, sure, but I cannot stand the controls. It feels amazing some of the time, but abysmal at other times and that’s really jarring

I feel this in my soul and it baffles me when so many say it controls amazingly. I just don’t get it. The same goes for Melee for me, I just don’t like how it feels to control. I want to love them, and they clearly put a lot of love into them, but I just can’t.

based RT, even when i was little i always hated the controls in mario sunshine, it feels terrible to play, and the level designs sucks too

i really don't understand why people consider it one of the best mario games
