what does magnetic flux linkage mean? I've not heard of any magnetic flux "linkage" before

The direction of l and u are not same. How they can be interchanged?? The direction of u is towards positive x and direction of l is towards positive y. You have mixed two different forces. The first one Fm=q(u*B) is the force acting on charges in the conductor due to B and is called motional emf. It is responsible for the induced current and the direction of this force is towards positive y. In your second sheet, the Fm is different. Fm= I(l*B) is the force on the conductor due to that induced current and its direction is towards negative x. Both Fm are different in my opinion. Please clarify.
