It isn't my job to make someone feel comfortable when they've deliberately made me uncomfortable.

IagainstI.

That is a fabulous response. Hurt people hurt others, in general.

“A friend is putting you down” seems like an oxymoron

I usually answer with a nice ”oh how do you mean?”, it almost always works.

When they start to try and explain it becomes painfully obvious that they are kind of rude.

Does not always work but very often.

That’s terrible advice. It will only start an argument. Silence is a better option. It will force them to reflect on what they just said and they will feel shame inside.

Bullies 100% of the time freak out when being confronted - by anything (sharp or mundane). If you use these 3 little words you better have a strategy for what comes next. It might be better to just take a high road and keep your side of the street clean. One of the key things I've learned is that being right is not enough. The other thing I've learned is that whatever you're being acused of (like lieing for example) is exactly what your acuiser is repeatedly guilty of. Like poker, it may be better to fold your hand so you can play another round. Be strategic, not tactical.

I don't like passive-aggressive. I'm going direct every time. I didn't appreciate that comment. Why did you say it? Please don't do it again. If that's a problem, you can go.

This is horrible advice. People tend to get offended instantly with that response. A much better way is a long drawn out "I see". Now hold the look with emotion and be silent. They will reflect or will continue to respond angrily. Respond again with a lower tone then them but make it drawn out. Everytime they shout you use a tone contrary to theirs.

I worked with an older woman, early 60s, and she was the definition of "the old south". Mind you, I'm a minority, so her passive-aggressiveness could've been very well been mistaken for a bit of prejudice, bigotry, etc. I highly doubt that "this 3-word response" would've changed the atmosphere, let alone her demeanor.

This is America at its finest. So easily offended

Before you teach “etiquette “ to a country, would you please start with teaching how to use a fork and knife correctly? Much more important!

Haha, this is typical American behavior. It's as lame as saying "I'm fine, thank you" when someone offers you coffee.
