Fantastic pattern. It works like a charm here also. Tried it yesterday at the Ter river in Catalonia, Spain. Only variation, here a ginger hackle works better on a size 20 hook. Thanks!

I've caught one grayling before and it was on this pattern, that trip to colorado was awesome and that was the only fish on that day, the orange asher came to the rescue.

I like simple and quick to tie patterns, this one meets that requirement of mine and then some, Orange works and I would also try different colors, like blue, purple etc, all you are out is a hook and a hackle that is not much good for anything else but- my midge box or should I say Griffiths Gnat box has that and the variations from 20 down to 26, I don't tie them in 28 anymore, no need to. I was surprised how well blue and purple works a times on sipping trout on a lot of the heavy fished C+R waters- one of the things that I love about tying flies is that you can make small changes to fit a situation you run into on the stream, some work extremely well and becomes a go to fly in my box some not so much! Every fly is a variation of something else or an improvement, we live in great times for a fly fisherman, You tube is very valuable and then there is the high quality materials we can get, far cry from the early 1960's when I started, and even the first big wave of the 1980's we have it so good!

Thanks for the video. Tied up a dozen size 24 of these last night. Easy pattern that looks great.

Great to sit on cold mornings with my coffee and watch these. Is that weird? haha

I like it. Last summer I tied a Griffiths Gnat with a peacock body and used an orange/peach colored hackle. I have no idea why that worked but it did. My friend made one and caught a 22" rainbow on it. They must like orange! Sometimes you just experiment and get lucky.

I always tie this fly backwards like a wooly bugger, the counter wraps of thread reinforce the hackle, and theres no worry about blocking the hook eye with hackle.

I know this is old but do you ever use different thread color

Great pattern. Could you  use orange floss? I assume so since UTC is such a flat thread, a floss could be easily substituted. All the best to you and thanks for sharing.

What brand hackle pliers do you use?  I ordered a pair from a company I will leave unnamed and I have been less than impressed. Thanks

Do you fish this as a dry fly or as a nymph? I'm guessing dry and if so is it a searching pattern since there's not much on top at this time of year? Great video as always!

Would you fish this over a griffiths gnat as a midge pattern?

Would this work in the Rocky mountains?
