We have all heard this word during the pandemic. But do you know it's origins? Explore its roots with The English Nut.

The word quarantine comes from the Italian quarantino, derived from quaranta giorni, meaning 40 days: When the word was invented in Italy in the middle ages, medical isolation was stipulated for 40 days.

This was when bubonic plague, or the Black Death as it was known, infected Europe and even spread to Asia.

First, a 30-day isolation period was introduced in a place called Ragusa in 1377. It was called trentino, derived from the Italian word for 30.

It worked and was gradually adopted by other cities.  Along the way, the period of isolation increased by ten days, and trentino became quarantino.

Nowadays, a quarantine can last any number of days, fewer or more than 40.
