don't let your voice be silenced.

I'm not a sociologist but it seems like turning a city of 2 million people into a prison produces bad results. Maybe Israel should stop doing that, even though some Palestinians are still alive.

In a sane world, Jake Tapper would be bringing Mehdi Hasan coffee and shining his shoes.

"We are waging the most moral war."
"Then justify it."
"No."

I hate debate audiences. It's clear that the organisers try to get a more or less even smattering of people who support one side or the other, but the audience wants to create the impression that their side is the majority opinion; so after a debate participant makes their point the audience doesn't just clap, they SCREAM and CHEER in competition with the other half of the audience that are doing the exact same thing for the other side.

And the cheering and screaming sounds even louder in contrast to that silent intro.

What I like about Mehdi is that he wasn't always like this. He's had some truly aweful stances. He called Atheists animals. Held homophobic views. He was opposed to abortion. But during his exposure to politics he learned, changed his mind about things, reviewed his previous stances and adressed them. He apologized and turned into this. Kind of makes you hopeful for other conservative religious people.

This just feels like the same argument that starts with my parents. Yes Hamas bad, but Israel also bad. I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive my mom for telling me my dead grandparents would be ashamed of me for condemning Israel

I think calling ur opponent a liar is lame, but *proving* your opponent is a liar is just good argumentation.

Pro Israel Guy makes me think I’m watching 40k Lore.

I really enjoyed how Mehdi asked him if all parties Hamas & Israel should be held accountable, would you support that? Elyon refused to say Netanyahu should be held accountable. 👨🏿‍💻

I’m surprised he didn’t call the moderator anti-Semitic for saying his times up

I'd like to remind everyone that Medhi Hasan has a book you can read or listen to (that's actually narrated by Medhi as well) called Win Every Argument that is a fantastic guide on how to argue in ways that are persuasive and effective

This debate unironically felt like a normal human debating a 40k character on war crimes

It's really cute when Eylon says "[Israel] would have done a preemptive strike if it had known about October 7th" like it's not widely understood that Israel literally knew about October 7th and deliberately allowed it to happen.

I remember in a Criminology class we discussed racism and the "prejudice plus power" thing was held onto by the instructor. It caused many problems. I had to argue for a good five minutes that the connotation and common use completely undermines the "prejudice plus power". I think we wound up just not using the term because it had been poisoned by the "new" definition. We just went back to Racial Prejudice / biases as what we referred to. Completely deleterious to productive discussion.

Mehdi Hasan says he's against war crimes, and yet we've just seen him war crime Eylon Levi. Curious.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think the screaming and cheering when the person they agree with “scores a point” is disgusting given the debate topic.
