Issa Rae: 'The Americans' Deserve a Win & 'Rooting for All The Black People' | Emmys 2017

HBO's 'Insecure' creator and star Issa Rae joins The Hollywood Reporter on the 2017 Emmy Awards red carpet to talk about who she'd like to take home a win tonight?

These comments are really quite disturbing. Yes, out of context, if someone says they are rooting for a group of people based on skin color alone, that could be considered discriminatory. But if we take a second, use our brains, and understand a different perspective, a historical perspective where media, entertainment, and broadcasting revolved around white people. Where, only in the past few decades, black people were exposed in a positive light after enduring centuries of insulting caricatures and and stereotypes ("The Mammy", "The Sambo", ect.) After not having an equal opportunity to win these awards and share our talents while white people were NEVER handicapped in this way. Maybe you'd understand why a black woman would want to root for other black people.

Maybe you'd understand why it doesn't hold the same weight if a white person were to say "I'm rooting for all the white people". There's no reason for a white person to say that BECAUSE THEY ARE STILL DOMINATING THE INDUSTRY!! Are people seriously so detached that they can't understand what she meant by her statement!? If people of the past could endure Black Face and Minstrel shows, surely SURELY you can endure movies like "Get Out" and a 20 second interview. Honestly!

I'm also loving how all of these egalitarian activists aren't hesitating to argue with the people defending Issa for supporting black people, but I haven't seen any one of them bother confronting the blatantly undeniable racist comments and slurs against black people that people have posted for no reason at all. Nice.

So rather than everybody collectively celebrating the best performances and willfully choosing to be more inclusive of all races, creeds and persuasions and respecting individuals on merit, Issa would now rather us disproportionately favour just black people for the next x number of years, regardless of merit, solely so we can reverse the history books award by award. I'm a proud racist black woman so I can see why she's rooting for black people. It's 2017 and we don't need to hide our racism anymore.

This is exactly what annoys me. Black people can get away with saying so much where as if a white person said it they would be probably be in court. It's just something you don't say out loud for the sake of peace, if you want to vote for your own then go ahead but there's no need to make a public statement about it. SOME black people seem to think it shows strength and support for one another but in truth it creates a big divide at a time we should make effort to unite. There's good and bad in all people however the white people alive today weren't responsible for the horrible actions of the past.

I'm not white or black but I would love to see people promoting unity and love. Unfortunately all I see is on social media is black this, black that, black power! not to mention racist jokes about white people on social media and in black movies. But when a white person does the same, black people are in rage. It's just not fair and we shouldn't expect special treatment. Things need to change...
