Introduction to Philosophy | Dr. Peter Kreeft
A poverty of proper philosophy is the ruin of the West. The medievals long believed theology to be the queen of the sciences; thus philosophy is truly the prince. Theology (soul) + Philosophy (mind) = Christian living at its best. After all, did not the greatest philosopher himself—in the guise of a carpenter from Nazareth—exhort us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, strength, soul and mind?

To richly receive the due benefits of this master craft called philosophy, one needs a master craftsman. Thus, we present to you the greatest philosopher of this past century in the heralded Dr. Peter Kreeft. Author of over 90 books, and professor of philosophy at Boston College for almost 60 years running, there is no greater mind or authority on the subject than this prodigious practitioner.

The tools of the philosopher are reason, logic, propositions, definitions, clarity and coherence; and the canvas of philosophy is most often found in literature. Because of such, Dr. Kreeft studiously presents twelve books that have philosophically transformed the world over. From Plato to Dostoyevsky, and Aquinas to Lao Tzu, from Augustine to Boethius, to Aristotle and Tolkien, you will learn to drink via the best works, written by the best authors, taught by the best teacher, to satiate your thirsty soul and parched mind with rivers of truth.

Ravishingly immerse yourself in Dr. Kreeft’s tour de force in this Introduction to Philosophy. Prepare to be intellectually stimulated, soulfully aroused, and mentally stretched, because we promise you with confidence that you will not be the same afterwards.

I finally understand the story of Job! I also understand so much more about who God is too. Thank you so much for sharing this! I also very much enjoyed your sharing of Ed Muskie’s comment! It was a hoot! 😆

The most beautiful opening to a clip I've ever seen. Thank you for setting such a magnificent experiential stage, a digital Cathedral, in which to listen to Dr Kreeft.

I think one possible explanation for God saying Job spoke rightly and the friends didn't, is that God rewards/blesses those wrestle with Him. Think of Jacob/Israel wrestling for his blessing.

Maybe a better question would be- why do good things happen to bad people?

My favorite answer to the problem of evil is the greek philosopher Epictetus' "What would have become of Hercules do you think if there had been no lion, hydra, stag or boar - and no savage criminals to rid the world of? What would he have done in the absence of such challenges?

Obviously he would have just rolled over in bed and gone back to sleep. So by snoring his life away in luxury and comfort he never would have developed into the mighty Hercules.

And even if he had, what good would it have done him? What would have been the use of those arms, that physique, and that noble soul, without crises or conditions to stir into him action?"

Interestingly, while his friends are doing somersaults attempting apologetics, Job says, essentially, that God is cruel and capricious and God confirms it, it's just that God has an upper hand, higher authority.

The other logical conclusion to draw from such apologetics (and we see this in various Christian sects, and from a Mother Therese quote) is that we should not interfere with the suffering of others — clearly, the wrongs visited upon them are from God's love.

And that is why a saccharine happy end needed to be tacked on to this story at a later date — written in a recognizably different cadence, an obvious later forgery.

I like St. Anselm's definition of freedom, he defined it as the "capacity for preserving rectitude of the will for its own sake".  For Anselm a rational agent has freedom if the actions of this agent are self-initiated, free from external pressure, and, aimed at sustaining moral correctness. As finite beings that we are, and therefore of very limited understanding, I suppose that suffering allows us to clearly see our chains ..

I wonder what Bible he's holding or reading? Any guess?

In the book of Job God does something we would today consider to be completely evil.
Letting Job's children die. We do no longer think that children are merely a possession of the father.
