If I was very rich, I wouldn't buy luxurious brands but have all my clothes tailored for me. Why buy something that fits somehow when you can get something that fits perfectly has the exact fabric and the exact style you want?

I worked as a bank teller for about a year and it really taught me a lot. The wealthiest person that I ever saw there came dressed in rags carrying important paperwork in a plastic grocery bag and driving a beater Taurus. Guy must’ve had more than $5 million and no debt. Owned multiple take out franchises in town. Very humble and low key. When he left, we all joked that with all that money he could at least splurge on a binder for his papers.

“Money speaks, but wealth whispers.”
Amazing quote right there, I really want an opportunity to use it in a serious financial conversation now.

I liked telling people I drove a 'Vette.
But then I had a good laugh when they'd come out to look at it and see it was a Chevette, not a Corvette.
I have a weird sense of humor. 😄

My father once told me "Don't tell everyone what you have, they may take advantage of you" and I have followed that advice throughout my life, I also rarely buy anything or waste any money, why on earth would I waste money on a Gucci coat? I don't want that unwanted attention. The one time I might buy something expensive it might be a new headset or something and I only share that with friends "Hey x, I bought this new cool headset, my old one was broken, what do you think of it?".

Several years ago, maybe even farther back (like early 00's) in most of the women's and coffee table magazines, there was a full page ad, of a woman in probably her 70's, dressed up, hair done, makeup, looking very nice. Under the picture it said something like 'I'm TIRED of all of my family fighting over my money before I'm even gone. So I've decided to take full page ads out in every magazine I can find, until it's all gone. Then it has her signature. I found it in like Women's Day or Better Homes and Gardens, waiting in a doctor's waiting room. I showed it to spouse. I quickly looked in a few more magazines and found more copies of it. Bravo to her.

Spent tons of money on a Gucci belt? 🤣 that guy is destined to be a loser forever. Even if he won 10 million in the lottery, he'd still be dead broke in less than 2 years guaranteed!

I’m Puerto Rican, not Dominican, but our cultures are similar. Yes, the appearance of wealth matters significantly more than actually growing wealth. My fiancé hates that aspect of our culture and it bothers me sometimes too. There’s a very limited and trashy definition of being well off among Caribbeans, and it usually involves assuming expensive is better and liking things based on cost rather than quality or utility.

We actually cancelled our big wedding and cut down our guest list to 28 people because I couldn’t take it anymore. My mother pestering me to get the best of everything, to pay for more expensive things, wanting to invite more and more distant relatives and friends to show off what her daughter can afford, etc. I was talking to an Egyptian vendor and he said it was the same for Egyptians, and that if the wedding was truly for me and my fiancé rather than a party to show off to mom’s friends then he recommended calling off the big wedding because with a culture like ours, it’s hard to regain control. It was a huge wake up call for us, and we did exactly that: big wedding cancelled. Our wedding is now 28 people, we’re getting married in the woods at the base of a volcano and having a reception at a private garden we rented. No limo. No huge venue. No obnoxious decor. No hundreds of guests. No big party. Just us, the most important people, and a lot of trees…next to a volcano lol.

When someone screams “I’M POOR BUT PRETEND I’M RICH”

The richest person I knew wasn't my dad's boss who flaunted his "wealth" by buying an expensive house or pedigree dog or latest gagets for his 4 kids and who's company went under and had to sell everything to pay down his debt. It was the nun who lived in a converted barn on someone else's property who was a retired nurse but took a vow of poverty so she couldn't spend her money and instead would do stuff like donate $10, 000 to the local ball park in secret so they could buy new lights. 😶

The people buying small luxuries because they have no hope of ever owning their home makes me unaccountably sad

Literally my neighbors from way back. We're a middle class family living in a fairly nice apartment building. Our next door neighbors, the adults, specifically, seem to have it in for us and always tries to one up us on everything, trying to show they're better than us. I was pretty good friends with the neighbors' kid so we mostly didn't care at the time. My dad bought a new LED TV for us when they became more affordable, our neighbors bought a bigger TV the next week. We adopted a puppy, they bought a pedigree from the pet store a few days later. We bought a second hand SUV, they got a brand new SUV a few weeks later. Found out they bought all that stuff on credit, and they also were way behind on rental fees for the apartment. Found them packing their stuff up in the middle of the night and leaving the place without even settling the fees for the apartment. The landlady was fuming the next day and was literally screaming in anger when she found the apartment empty. Lmao. Also, we treated the neighbors very kindly, and we mostly live a very quiet life so I really didn't understand why they did what they did.

I went on a date with this girl in Honduras this past new year’s eve. We were having drinks at this hut by the beach when some older guy pulled up in a Corvette and my date practically begged the owner to let her take pictures while sitting on top of the hood. I was so disgusted. I blocked her number after that day.

Wanna be rich people are always talking about status and money. I mean come on, if you have it, you don't need to talk about it. Same goes with talent. many insecure people who try to one up others when they aren't that good.

If I have money, I will prefer to spend on experiences (travel, education, charity/outreach). That way, when I die, I leave nothing behind but good memories.

A great example of what real rich people are like is I have a friend who lives in probably the smallest town ever in Costa Rica and looks like the stereotypical “surfer bum” but owned three house and rents them out, he is also a millionaire because he lives the most simplistic life style ever and doesn’t even own a car, he also owns a little surf shop, and if u saw him for the first time u would think he is broke
