I lived in Tornado alley when I was younger. This noise always scared the shit out of me because I knew what was coming.

I remember living in North Dakota one time. They blasted the sirens one night during a pretty heavy thunderstorm. And it scared the living shit out of me because for one, the lightning was intense, and it was hailing. Plus it was dark. Felt like a movie. Turns out a funnel cloud was nearby but nothing serious happened, couple damaged trees and some flat wheat but nothing else came of it.

Little else in this world is as terrifying as the shrill blare of a tornado siren on an overcast day. That sudden seizing in your stomach, that hot sensation of surprise and fear, the jolt of adrenaline in your veins; it all means, "Take cover, hide, get away". I was terrified of storms as a kid, and this noise always filled me with a palpable sense of dread.

I lived in East Texas as a toddler and I remember hearing this sound one night. I was little and had no idea what it meant, but I remember being scared as Hell as my mom told me to hide under my bed.
