In this video I will discuss why I fly all my model rockets with the acceptation of just a few. All of them will fly at least once though. Not Gut No Glory, I don't want static FLYING model rocket kits.

Model Rockets 321 will bring you model rocket discussions, model rocket builds, kits, reviews, kits and my rocket flying history. I will also interview some other rocket flyers and builders like yourself.

Thanks for visiting Model Rockets 321. This channel will bring you all sorts of Model rocket videos.

Much respect for you man. In my previous hobby, RC Cars, I became obsessed with building perfect shelf queens done in the stock box livery. Once I had what I wanted I went on and decided I wanted the Tamiya first 100 new in box and spent 15 yrs acquiring those. At the end of the day I had 200+ Cars that are either not built or too pretty to run. I slowly sold off the majority of the built models and replaced them with a few that I could run and not worry about.

When I returned to Rocketry about 5 yrs ago I made myself and my girlfriend a promise. Everything flies. Absolutely everything will get built and it will fly. Regardless of price, rarity, time spent. Don't care, it's going up. It's a rocket until it flies. The one thig I do is to document each built and take measurements and patterns so I can reproduce them if/when they crash.

Keep up the videos.

Build. Fly. Repair. Repeat. But, if you enjoy them un flown, then by all means enjoy them as a shelf queen.

In my hobby, if it was made to be launched, it gets flown. I love the nicks and burns and dings, it adds character and reminds me of the fun and excitement of launch day.

IMO also flyable rockets are the least desirable static models as well, details and such are better in true static models.

The only flyable models I would not launch after a build would be if I thought it would be dangerous or I wasn’t qualified yet to launch it, but I don’t play with the big toys, just the little ones.

Keep flying!

After 40 years, I just got back into the hobby. I agree with what you say, these birds were meant to fly- at least once. Btw: you have an awesome collection of rockets! Love the little joe!

I COMPLETELY agree with you, Keith! A model rocket, once built, MUST fly at least once. I've flown many over the years- crashes, fails, and lost rockets are part of the hobby. In the case of rockets that are truly special, I find the biggest field possible and launch them when the conditions are best for recovering them. Regardless, they all FLY, even though I have more rockets on "eternal patrol" than I have in my collection right now! KEEP FLYING!

Hell yeah fly that stuff! It's not like they're collecting value.

When it comes to rockets, I have the "Toy Story" philosophy... the rockets WANT to fly, it is their dream, and they are sad and unhappy is left getting dusty on a shelf.

If they weren’t supposed to be launched they wouldn’t have a motor tube and parachute.

First model rocket I built as a teenager was the Falcon Commander you have there in the background. It flew flawlessly. A bunch. A few years ago I wanted my daughters to experience model rocketry like I did as a kid so "we" (ok..mostly me) built a beautiful Mercury Redstone. I did build a different nose from scratch to keep from flying it with that intricate escape tower and we launched it 3 times on a C 6-3. It also flew flawlessly. I have another pack of motors waiting to fly it again. I agree with you..build em and fly em!

From my amateur minded viewing of your Saturn V flights, it appears that you need additional fin surface for stable flight along with probably moving the CG towards the nose. It's a beautiful rocket and deserves to fly in a glorious flight!!

Hypothetical situation Keith:
Say that you knew for a fact that your life would end tomorrow. Would you fly that Farside today?

Keith you are a true Rocketeer and flying rockets are great there are some I really love that I don't fly but there are many in my collection that I definitely will build to fly I think it's a great thing to have them both but there simply isn't anything wrong with anyone launching their rockets after all they are designed to fly

My Saturn 1B took so long to build, I don’t think I will risk it

I could not agree more.. the people who by the good kits just not to fly them can be annoying. I am not flying my Saturn v bc I did not build it well but I will still try to launch it.

That Farside is just begging to have its destiny of glorious flight realized :).

Bingo. FLYING model rockets. They were designed to fly (well, and to SELL later on, unfortunately)...the CATALOGS even say that on the very title. And they have places for ENGINES and for RECOVERY people.
