Mental health is a state of emotional, psychological, physical, and social well-being. One's holistic health is considered incomplete without good mental health. However, mental health often takes a back seat as people still hesitate to talk about it. India has one of the world’s largest population of people with mental issues with more than 80% of people not having access to care services for a multitude of reasons, ranging from lack of knowledge, stigma and high cost of care. To have a better understanding of mental health issues in detail, Smita Prakash spoke with Kamna Chhibber who is the Head of Mental Health at the Department of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences at Fortis Healthcare. In an informative conversation, Kamna explained how individuals can take care of their well-being and manage emotional distress. She also talks about ways in which mental health can affect anyone regardless of age, intelligence, or social class, emphasising how a child’s mental health is just as crucial as their physical health. Throughout the conversation, she busts myths and taboos related to mental health.

Thanks mam for doing this podcast, you are my companion during my commute to office everyday.
It's nice that we are bringing up this awareness to people about mental health.
Having said that I myself have tried to seek help for almost 9 years now on off and couldn't experience much improvement. If by chance you do another session on similar topics can you try to bring up following points.
1. What is expected as the outcome of therapy or treatment? And what is expected timeline, or how it works?
2. How much medicines help? At one point of time I had taken medication for almost three months has not felt any improvement?
3. It's a common practice for all of us to seek second opinion of doctors for normal treatment, in that case we just discuss with friends and relatives, but in this case this is a taboo and what are the pointers when you should think of taking second opinion?
4. Discuss mental health of men, I think today's men are contributing more in day to day works in your home, the jobs like cooking or washing clothes stuffs..so dynamics are changing, men are in many cases primary earner, supporter in home stuff, provider to wife ( mental support), provider to parents, so please don't think their job is easy. Yes talk about women but give men also some of your time, they are also equally vulnerable, at least in the educated middle class households.
5. How to decide on choosing your therapist, this is from my personal experience, taking therapy primary depends on patients willingness of being ready to ask for help that is a big barrier, once you cross that and go to a therapist who will treat the patient in such a way that he or she never visit again and it may become that it will just remain untreated whole life, so how to choose your therapist?
6. Accessibility and affordability of therapy? How important is to get the help the time you need it most?
7. How spirituality is connected with therapy? I feel that there could be some connection, like our basic Hindu philosophy is how to deal with this world of suffering?
8. What is the success rate of therapy in sorting out issues? does it happen? What numbers say on that?
9. Story telling is a powerful tool, it impacts human more than reading a theory for same thing. So why don't we use some real life stories and resolution of it after seeking help as a medium to bring awareness.
10. How therapist manage patients. I personally feel that they should empathize with patients, but on the contrary Dr s are dealing with so much negativity treating these patients that they themselves can become patients if they empathize with every patients, how do they deal with it.

A lot of thanks. you are doing a superb job. All the best wishes to you.

Please do a part2 of this, to explore deeper psychology topics which are becoming INCREASINGLY relevant - inner child healing, mother wound and father wound. and how parenting is something couples need to ALSO think about when planning a child. an abused child grown into an adult is very difficult to heal - bcz they get left behind in the pace and pressures of needing to perform when they are UNABLE to.

Mental health ek dhandha bann chuka hai.. naye naye shabd bana kar aur human as a chemical factory model par based hai jo ki sahi baat nhi hai.. jo sochta h sirf dawai se wo theek hoga to wo bas dependent ho jata hai aur dhandha chalta rehta h.. mental health hazaro cheezon se bigad sakti h par yeh hamesha dawai se aapko chipka denge.. yeh mei nhi mera neurologist friend hi bolta hai to mujhe galli na de..

Humans are more capable than psychologists believe. The more we take, the more capable we become. Read so much Psychology for UPSC optional. I realised it's very debatable how these theories are just opinions and selective.

My observation precisely to this episode of the podcast, after 25 mins the interview was completely going away from the subject. Only open questions without any answers and every question was going in a different direction. I felt the host was not giving sufficient time to the guest and was changing the subject randomly.

In my capacity ihve been inclined o ook at it as a haze in perception and not exactactly a health issue. The environment has to mitigate the haze.
I was put into a diffiertent study streams
Like put into MA Eng. Lterersture
In UP. as accessibe and future on BEd. In Annamalalaii university.
So I would go cherry picking.
To my fair judgmement I realisized we really shared the same toughs. The push and pull is as f a trainis running too fast or too sow to meet factors of achievement.
