Fire breaks out at London's Somerset House

Priceless paintings by Monet, Cezanne and Van Gogh have been saved from destruction following a fire at world-famous London art venue Somerset House.

More than 100 firefighters tackled the blaze, which started in the building's roof.

It is not known what caused the fire.

Somerset House used to contain all the records of births, deaths, marriages, and census records. I hope these are now digitised and kept somewhere else. The IRA burnt the Dublin records office in 1915. It makes tracing Irish family ancestors almost impossible.

As a direct descendant of Sir John Herrick, I hope that the information they have about Him was at least digitalized. Cause I plan on visiting the U.K. next year to learn as much as I can about Him.

I went to a theatre the other day and judging the seating and the layout of that particular venue, I did question the Health and safety issues in that particular Theatre

Especially if a fire had broken out. Everything was just so antique, I said to myself that I doubt it that anything would survive in this particular building

And there are are many examples of this across London. So I am not surprised that if something survived world war over 100 years ago, goes up in flames 100 years later
