A very important difference in American and Australian politics is that the conservatives lost their moderate base in wealthy cities because these centre right areas believe in climate action and an anti corruption watchdog. Seats that had been held by to conservatives for almost a century fell to local independents. Trumpian politics blew up in the liberals face as much of their base is moderate and we have a preferential voting system so even though multiple parties run smaller third parties and independents were able to take seats in the conservative heartland.


No matter where you are on American politics you should support preferential voting or so called rank choice voting as it allows voters real choice rather than just picking between the two major parties.

Morrison and the Liberal Party completely misread Australians' concerns about climate change, rising sea levels (a serious issue to various Pacific island nations right on Australia's doorstep) and industrial pollution. Morrison's government was so deep in the pockets of the oil, gas and coal industries that he could never dare to admit climate change was real. His corporate donors would have been very unhappy...

I hope all Americans, especially the millions of Trump supporters, take notice of what happened in Australia as the results came in for the 2022 election. It was clear on election night, before 10pm, that there was no possible path for victory for the government. Everyone among the government, the governing party and their supporters accepted the result, and the Prime Minister conceded defeat gracefully and congratulated the victorious Labor Party and its leader, Anthony Albanese. The issues which mainly drove the result were climate change and integrity in government, and the outgoing government's inaction and resistance on both of these issues.
