As a choral singer myself, I feel the need to comment. My choir prepared this piece for an ACDA conference a few years ago, and without singing it I'm not sure how to convey the difficulty level of the piece. While my choir is considered to be certainly one of the best in the country, comparing our recording to this, they sound as if they are different pieces. The Stellenbosch choir has taken an intricate, delicate, interwoven piece, and unwound it carefully to create beauty - imagine unrolling a ball of yarn, only as you unroll it, you are simultaneously weaving it into a sweater.

Wow the eerie sound after that clap at 3:22 and the end is such a clever element of the composer

I loved singing this piece of Levente Gyöngyösi as he is one of my favorite composers. So grateful that I got to be a part of this 🥺

Gosh, they make this incredibly difficult piece sound easy! The level of skill! Without even knowing the title translates in 'From the deaths I cry', the basses made it so easy to grasp. Each voicegroup crying out in their own unique way, yet marvelously collecting to ensure you listen to their cries. Phenomenal work here!

It is an astonishing choral piece, it is like the confused but understandable mad mind talk of a disturbed soul. Even the silence at the end felt totally part of the music.

First I thought, “nah, I’m not gonna like this”. Then I couldn’t stop watching. How? All I can think is, “How can they sing this piece so precisely?”

There's not a single member of this choir who's not heart and soul into what they're delivering.

Out of the depths, I cry! This is the opening strophe of Psalms 130, and with this superbly performed but technically incredibly difficult composition, one truly gets a sense of the psalmist's anguish. I suspect that King David would say, "At last, a contemporary composer understands the pain, and yet this Psalm could have been prayed in my court." A standing ovation for this composer and the Stellenbosch University Choir! Deacon Dr. Paul Cook
