Beginner photographers often get confused about Nikon's 35mm and 50mm 1.8g prime lens. It's really a tough decision for many photographers in the beginning about which prime lens to buy, specially on crop sensor camera. Hope this video will help you a bit in making your decision.

I really love the bokeh and the compression from the 50mm 1.8 but it is just too tight on my crop sensor DSLR. The photos look amazing and I love how it isolates the subject but I do a lot of hiking and biking and I just wanted to take my camera and no spare lenses and I think the 35mm 1.8 is more versatile on a crop sensor camera. It will allow me to do some landscape photos and allow me to include more of the amazing places I visit in the frame with my subject. If I had a full frame DSLR I would hands down go with the 50mm.

Here's the easy answer: 35mm on DX and 50mm on full frame.

I have 50 mm lens in Dx body. It's a good portrait lens. If you need more people in your camera move little back further. You can accommodate at least 4-5 people at 7-8 feet distance. I don't think 35 mm is good option though. As kit lens too is a very good lens because you can go down upto 18mm to cover more of street area and lanscapes as compared to 35mm lens. obviously we won't be doing street photography at night so daylight is just enough for you. So, 35 is neither best for portrait nor for wide angle view. with 50 mm lens and kit lens you have everything you need.

I went with the 50, loved it on my dx dslr! But then i decided to borrow my friends 35 for a week, now i wish i went with the 35 ! So i purchased it, ill be holding on to my 50 for when i go full frame! Great straight forward review though!

For group pictures or street photography the kitlens will just do fine, for portraits is the 50mm.

If you are not sure go to google or flickr, search pic that are taken with the lens you want, for a nice depth with 35mm, use it in manual with the f.1.8 , put iso (if it is day 100 up to 200 if it is not too sunny, night 400 or 800 max) shatter speed that depend you try and tune it. 50mm is good if you are only planing on doing portraits, but if you are doing other stuff, 35mm can be a very good portrait lens. At least that is my opinion. I am going with 35mm f 1.8

I owned 50mm lens bfr 1 yr...
Guys it's good if u r beginner...But if u wanna go out with family u cannot use it.. for potraits 50 is good...But overall 35mm is all-rounder for d series..

Now am gna buy 35mm bcz am focusing more on family / group pics rather than portraits ...

I had the 50mm 1.8D nikor lens and it was very sharp, beautiful Bokeh, used it on my D5300 but then i sold it because taking pictures in doors of 3-5 people was not possible. Now i have the 35mm 1.8G and i love it, it is wide enough for shooting more people in small rooms and its easier to get closer or step back then with the 50mm.

Thank you for the video! Im using D7100 and yes its cropsensor which is kinda dissapointed at first because I buy it just for my study. But, the real thing is who is behind the camera. If you mastered it well. The photo will be boom as you want it to be.

I own both :) heres the bottom line, I like the 50 on a fx and the 35 on dx :) I recently used the 50 in snowy weather on my D700, everything worked well!! as its weather sealed! my best prime is my Zeiss 85m! thats not weather sealed and is best used in good conditions! never in rain etc.

In 1985, when I got my first Nikon, a F3HP. I tried the 35mm F2 instead of a 50 as a standard. I didn't use it much
