I got cancer for DU. It's not from the radiation. It's from the dust particles created during impact that are the danger when inhaled or ingested. As an 11B, I was regularly patrolling areas that had been hit with DU rounds. I was exposed back in 2003 and have had many health issues since. At my local VA, tumors were found in an MRI followed by 2 surgeries within 3 days of each other back in 2022. The surgeon believes they got all the tumors out. Time will tell. I've already been predeceased by several others in my task force from cancer

Probably a bit late now, but you should definitely wear a respirator when firing these, especially at close range, and it wouldn't hurt to decontaminate yourself properly afterwards. Alpha particles are very easily stopped even by air, but if they're sitting inside your lungs, they're going to be emitting radiation right into the surrounding tissue, and in that scenario they're much more dangerous than a beta or gamma source, because the alpha particles are much bigger and carry much more energy. That huge plume of sparks about 10 feet from your face is made up of small particles of Uranium. U-238's half-life is 4.5 billion years, so as long as it's in your lungs, it's going to be emitting radiation.

Absolutely astonished you didn't wear a respirator doing that, and or shoot it from a much great distance. The fact that fissionable material struck your visor would suggest you were actually exposed to particulate uranium oxide in the air around you.
