I love how this song conducts a deconstruction " I ain't got nothing", leting the ego go away, to then proceed to build from what is real: me, genuine and truly me. Realizing how powerful we're when we've understood who we are. Awakening is such a powerful transformation tool. Bless Nina for that.

This song remembers me an interview of a girl who was immigrant from Sudan. She lost her older sister somewhere in Turkey and came in Greece alone. She had only her soul and her body. I hope she is good.

This power of Nina Simone sitting in the centre of a white audience with her and her all black band staring out and declaring everything that their race has had taken away from them is so incredible to watch. There’s such a tension to the performance. To me this whole performance is about defiance, when she declares she has life it’s like saying you can take everything, but you can’t take the humanity out of me. That’s why the second half is so powerful. All the tension releases as this beautiful defiance of struggle and it unites everyone, audience and band, in what they all share.
