It's a question I see often. Is the Saturn version of Castlevania Symphony of the Night(Dracula X Nocturne in the Moonlight) worth playing/owning if you have played/own the PlayStation original. Here we go over most of those extras and try to answer that question.

Opening "Sega" jingle is from Astal for the Sega Saturn.

Ending Music during the credits is from Batman for the Sega Genesis.

Episode Notes:

1. Captured on real hardware.

2. There are other small differences between the versions but I didn't want a 30 minute video going over tiny details that wouldn't mean anything to most people.

3. To date, the meat of the Saturn extras has not appeared in any other version of the game.

I’ve been waiting years for someone to put a video out detailing exactly what the extras are in the Saturn version. Thank you so much for this!!

The Jewel Sword in the Saturn version also gets an ATK boost if you equip sellable jewels as accessories. Two diamonds makes it the strongest sword in the game without grinding.

To me this is your best video. I always wanted to know the difference between the PlayStation and Saturn version. And you made that clear, thank you

It was a budget title release in Japan. I remember ordering it when it came out for like 25 dollars

I'll always love that version of Vampire Killer that plays in the Underground Garden. I love everything about the Saturn version, even the slowdown doesn't bother me.

you should do a video of Earthworm Jim 1 & 2, and the differences between them when it comes to bonus material/secret bosses when playing the Genesis/Sega CD/Saturn, and how to unlock them. :) maybe a graphics comparison as well. XP

If you put a disc into a PC you can extract a txt file. Where you can run it through a Google Translate and learn what happened during development. Like you said, small inexperienced team who weren't given nearly enough time. I'd love to see such a game get an open source code release. So we can see what a proper Saturn port should have been like.

Your videos are like drugs man. You watch one and you gotta watch every other on the channel. They scratch that SEGA itch so perfectly.
Keep up the excellent work.

Maria's boss theme in the Saturn version is one of the most underrated tracks in the whole Castlevania series 😢

The Saturn version had some great extras. For the next compilation release I would love for Konami to release the PS1 version as well as a patched Saturn version of Symphony of the Night and if they include the WiiWare version of Castlevania Rebirth, that would be an instant buy for me and I know for many others. I already have all the recent Castlevania compilations and they all are bangers. Thanks again for the video and for the detailed comparison. This game needs a proper re-release.

I love the Saturn version of the game, but I usually end up playing the hacked Ultimate version of it. I like also there's two more familiars, the Pixie and the Nosedevil. Also, the signed pencil board was part of a contest, if you found it, you would give them a call with proof and get something. I forget what it was.

Nice to see that you covered the Extra Content for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Sega Saturn version. Can you do a video of covering on Mega Man 8's Sega Saturn Extra Content since I don't think Capcom ever brought the Extra Content over in the Mega Man Legacy Collection Vol. 2 since they pretty much kept just the PlayStation version only in the release as it is for multiplatform?

Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 are some of the most underrated games of all time, the second was the only game to ever make me cry, I was 7 and got the bad ending

I find it odd that the fog is missing on the Saturn. I get why mesh is used on assets being drawn by VDP1, because that was the best way to do it (transparent aspects on VDP1 would make all other VDP1 assets behind it invisible, leaving just the background). But the fog could easily have been drawn as a VDP2 layer.

The first time I saw the mist in the stairs section I thought Dracula was coming for me.

I see people nowadays questioning why Sega just didn't made a 2d Sonic for the Saturn, but it was obvious that if they had released sonic 4 as a classic side scroller the media and public in general would see it as a statement of Saturn's weakness compared to their rivals Sony and Nintendo, back then 3d was a sign of modernity while 2d was becoming something dated, but a classic Sonic on the SS would look awesome it is for sure

I have the English translation version on my Saturn... It's probably my favorite version... The performance issues don't bother me, as I was used to the Saturn having some issues in certain games... I really like playing as Maria, it completely changes the feel and tactics of the game... I wish the modern re-release versons had implemented the Saturn extras...
