You just know the day Nathaniel Phillips came up with this bass line, he smiled. However, I doubt even he had any idea that the line would endure for this long. Today, it holds its own in the history of simply ridiculous R&B/funk bass lines. Congratulations, Phillips. If you never do anything else--and you've done plenty--your contribution to popular black music cannot be denied.

Driving my 1978 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 8 track stereo, white wall tires and spoke hub caps and jamming to bass hits like this on at Ft Polk La. was some good times.
