Most of the time the slash note is the 3rd of the chord, then if you play the 5th after that, in this case you end up with Em7. Lovely. Always think of the base notes as being either the root, 3rd or 5th and you'll play some really nice progressions. Then you can move into 7th and 9th and so on.

Elton John is, the man, when it comes to his divine craft of changes, and slash chords, as well as harmony and melody..those skills, came from early training and development, passion and persistence, and I'm so glad you address this..your playing and teaching skills solidly rock, receiving consistent gain from your examples..thank you much.

A slash chord has a top hat on... for good measure. Helps with the balance between tone and sustain.

Thank you Lisa. Playing the piano for 2 years and was still not quite sure what the slash meant. Could be because I never did a real deep dive into it, but you have explained perfectly here and now I will never forget. Thank you again.

To those in the comments who would like a little more information: this is also known as a G major chord in first inversion. Root position is GBD. First inversion is BDG (or BGD). Second inversion is DBG (or DGB).

Which note is in the bass (lowest note) determines whether the chord is in root position (root of the chord is in the bass, G in this case) or an inversion (the 3rd or 5th is in the bass).

This is very helpful…..THANK YOU!! Would make so much more sense if they had set these up with what you play with your left hand on the left and the main Chord you play with your right hand on the right! Right? 🙂

El piano es uno de los mejores instrumentos, siempre que quiero alejarme, el me acerca y atrae hacia el. Su complejidad me asombra, pero màs la sencillez con la que lo ejecuto, pues me da melodìas agradables.
