Over 20 years, 11 albums and hundreds of performances around the globe, Savatage’s dynamic music – which mixes elements of thrash, progressive, power metal and classic hard rock– earned the band a passionate cult following.

Founded in Tampa, Florida by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva, Savatage saw their many musical triumphs overshadowed by personal tragedy. Albums such as 1987’s “Hall of the Mountain King” – their first of eight collaborations with producer and mentor Paul O’Neill – and 1991’s riveting “Streets: A Rock Opera” continue to be celebrated to this day. The death of Criss Oliva on the heels of the breakthrough success of 1993’s “Edge of Thorns” altered the group’s trajectory considerably.

The band experienced a renaissance with their 1995 album “Dead Winter Dead,.” and continued to display a flair for theatricality of their own on their final two albums. An epic reunion performance at 2015’s Wacken Festival before 80,000 fans – showed proof that the crowds will never be gone.

Been a big savatage fan all my life. They r fucking AWSOME seen em early in Jan years ago on the streets tour when they came through Dallas. I was in shock layer when I heard that Chris was gone. I'll never forget em. One of my favorite bands on the planet.. and guitarists. He's up there with hendrix, roads. Dime bags, Duane allman....I'm just glad I actually got to see him play live...ill never forget that shoe. Rven though he was sick and his brother John was out there teasing him about food poisining... I could tell he was sick. He didn't even move, bit gd. He played perfectly. Didn't miss a fuckin note. R.I.P.

I will never understand why savatage was not as popular as one would expect. Like, in Egypt they were absolutely massive in the 90s. Anyone who was into rock appreciated Savatage. I think the same in east Europe, possibly Asia. Didn't seem to be recognised as one of the biggest bands in the US though for some reason. Weird. Absolute F***ing unmatched geniuses. Deserve a better place in the history books.

I used to see them live in Tampa about four times a year.They used to play at Stadium Lounge that became the RocketClub.They also used to play at the Ritz in Ybor City and LiveStock festival in Zephyrhills Florida where Chriss Olivia was killed in the head on car collision.They used to also play at ML chasers in ClearWater Florida.Those shows rocked like nobody’s business.
