Is it not basically the exact vowel sound used in the English word "red"?
Is there some subtle difference?

Hey I’m a bit confused about the difference between the E and the Ä because in the E/I video you said the I has a upward smile and E has downwards and here you’ve said E is upwards and Ä is downwards.

Wait. Isn't Äpfel written like Apfel or Väter is written like Vater or is it different depending on the region in Germany? Because I've seen some spelled with a umlaut and some without.

I thought German ä was an /æ/ sound in English as in words like 'back', 'cat', but the ä sounds more like an 'e' than an 'æ'.
