How long does it take to get new growth on a heart leaf hoya cutting? Spoiler alert...it takes a long time.

#hoya #hoyapropagation #sweethearthoya

I picked up this hoya kerrii variegata one year ago today and I thought I would have a little more to show. Come to find out, these plants take about as long as a ZZ plant. I also noticed that I have some leaf spots, which make me concerned I have a fungus or some hoya disease. If you have an idea of what is going on with my hear leaf hoya propagation, please leave me a comment below. I would love to hear your propagation tips.

I’ve seen several people say 7 years was the magic number for when they decided to push out new leaves, I just got one myself a few months ago before I knew this. Talk about long time propagation!

Leave the callus exposed at the base of the leaf (the little tuber). If exposed to light, it can generate bud tissue. If hidden or buried it stays the same. I've done this several times . it's the only way that works

I got extremely lucky and mine grew after 3 months since I bought it, but i think one of the issue with yours was that it was in a waaaay to big pot for the start. I still have mine in like 2 inch pot.

I have the green one leaf kerii and after a month or two it started its new growth. She has a tiny bit of the original stem. I didn't think it would grow anything. Now producing growth. Not all will from my understanding. What I did was expose the stem meaning didn't cover it up with soil. Let the soil dry out like all my hoyas. She gets bright indirect sun and its growing. Hope yours grows for you. 🤞🏽

I had 2 leaves that eventually grew out as a plant. One took a year and the other took a few years. I did nothing except water it. Now one has died but I managed to propagate what remaining healthy leaves it had left. The other is still around but facing some issues either old age or I don’t know. I kind of lost track which one they are now. It’s been over 10 years. Got them as a wedding favor and the couple didn’t even last as long as my plants

Hoya kerrii are better propagated with a stem. Leaf cutting have a small chance of developing shoots after 3-5 years but as long as it doesn't die, there still is a chance.

Last week I have seen a nice Hoya kerrii plant in a fabric store. I was so excited and asked where they bought it... It was a leaf that he bought on sale 3 years ago. It is now a nice looking plant. No need to say I went to the plant shop and bought a single Valentine leaf today. I see roots but have no idea if there is a nod.

The progress after one years looks great. Just leave it alone, water less and put it outside where it can get fresh air and sunshine. Just don't let it get more hours of direct sunshine that it gets indoors. You really need to let it stay totally dry between watering.

I would give myself a gift on Valentine’s Day too

I would have washed off the roots to make sure that the infected soil was all off before replanting.

I bought 2 about a month ago and transplanted them from their original container before I read this. Boo on that! I have them in a mix of potting soil, succulents potting soil and I always throw in a handful or two of perlite in my mix. I think I over watered them. I'm thinking of adding 35 % orchid potting soil into this mix. I need dryer soil . How much orchid mix do you recommend? Great video, very informative.

I don't have this hoya but I've heard that single leaf heart leaf hoyas from the store are purely ornamental as the way that they are cut often doesn't include a leaf node. So the plant does grow roots but never a new leaves.

Are there any updates? Is the plant still around?

Personally I’ve heard they grow. They just take awhile. I recently purchased one. I was told to allow it to dry out they do not like to be fussed with too much. Maybe it is insects? Have you tried Neemoil ? Maybe light? Not sure but really hope it cheers up!

My understanding is that the leaf will not grow if there was not a node attached, but it will produce roots and a stem for new leaves. After a while the original leaf will die but by then you will have a stem and leaves

I have a leaf with the same red borders! Do you know what it is?

Ive read up on this and it doesn’t look like it’s going to grow. It needs some stem to give out more hearts. Big box stores tend to do that. Still rooting for you Hoya
