QGIS Heatmaps Tutorial

In this comprehensive tutorial, we cover the basics of creating heatmaps using QGIS.

A heatmap is just a visual representation of data values often varying from cool (or low values) to warm (high values), and they are typically used to display the density or intensity of spatial data points across an area. And with this, they help identify patterns, such as hotspots where certain phenomena—like crime incidents, customer activity, or environmental measurements—are concentrated.

For the purposes of this tutorial, we make use of a real dataset that pertains to the reported crime incidents within and around the city of London, in the UK. Based on the dataset, we create a heatmap to identify areas with high crime incidents, which are considered to be the hotspots.

In the second part of the tutorial, we also cover the process of assigning weights to different crimes based on their seriousness, and we develop a weight index, which can be used for improving the accuracy of the heatmap.
