Acute urinary retention is an extremely painful condition characterized by the sudden inability to empty the bladder, despite the urge to urinate. This results in a rapid and uncomfortable buildup of urine in the bladder, causing intense pressure and pain in the lower abdomen. The sensation can be so severe that it often requires immediate medical attention to relieve the discomfort and prevent further complications.

This condition can be particularly concerning in individuals with hypospadias, a congenital condition where the opening of the urethra is not located at the tip of the penis but rather on the underside. Hypospadias can lead to an abnormal flow of urine, which sometimes increases the risk of urinary tract problems, including acute urinary retention. The anatomical differences associated with hypospadias can cause difficulties with urination, such as weak stream or incomplete emptying, which may contribute to the development of this painful condition.

In individuals with hypospadias, the structural irregularities of the urethra can complicate the normal flow of urine, making them more susceptible to blockages or obstructions that can lead to acute urinary retention. The pain and discomfort from retention, combined with the potential for urinary infections or kidney damage, make it crucial to address these symptoms promptly in those with hypospadias.

The simple brilliance of asking one tiny question “how do you normally do this?” Shows how great this doc is.

Doctors really need to allow more preventative visits to specialists especially people who complain about certain things. Instead they wait until the condition is deadly or agonizing. Its currently happening to me. Im asking God for help constantly now :( Gosh I wish doctors actually listened more.

It’s sad we’re not allowed to use proper terms to describe important parts of male anatomy on a medical video.

How has he never thought anything of it? That’s why we need sex Ed. It also teaches you human anatomy and people are able to find out if something is wrong with them.

Between 11 and 13 yo I had multiple surgeries on my urinary system. This was back when you were kept in the hospital for 1 to 2 weeks for what would now be same day release. This also meant that I was very familiar with catheters.

One particular time after I had been sent home I found myself needing to urinate but oddly wasn't able to. My mother called the doctor who dismissed her concerns saying that due to anticipated pain I was tightening my muscles and she just needed to push the fluids and eventually I wouldn't be able to hold it.

It didn't seem logical since I was quite used to the stinging the first time going after catheter removed, but my mother started pushing the fluids. By that evening I was in quite a bit of pain but each time she called she was told the same thing. By the time my mother decided to return to the hospital about 24 hours after I had been discharged I looked 9 months pregnant and was in total agony.

The problem was that during this particular surgery their had been excessive bleeding requiring a transfusion but they hadn't flushed out the bladder and there happened to be a number of blood clots which happened to settle over the urethra and as the bladder filled the urine pressed against the clot effectively sealing the opening.

When they inserted the catheter dislodging the clot there was enough force to literally blow the catheter out and even though laying on my back it was like a pink lemonade fountain that I couldn't have stopped if I wanted to.

Embarrassing? Not at all. The fact that the doctor and nurse had pee all over them as they scrambled to grab anything to catch the urine seemed fair since they refused to take my mother's phone calls and encouraged her to torture me more with their recommendation.

The most striking take away from this is the medical staff who repeatedly tried to insert a catheter, couldn't see there wasn't a hole, and didn't ask the patient anything...
I'm a pretty vocal patient for this very reason. Too many drs convinced our own bodies are alien to us. Dude we live in these, talk to us.

After I gave birth to my son with epidural, I had a lot of trouble urinating. By the time I convinced the nurses to put the catheter back in, my emptied belly pouch had let my bladder accrue 2L of urine. Yes it felt awful.

I had this problem but not for that reason. I went to the E.R three days in a row pregnant and hurting telling them somthing was wrong. Three days they sent me home saying I was pain seeking even tho I don't have a medical history of using pain medicine. On the fourth day I screamed for them to help me please they rolled their eyes and said cause i was pregnant i would need a cath for them to check things. They took 20 minutes to do it, but once they did, it was almost immediate relief!! I filled the bag almost 2 times. They actually apologized saying my bladder almost burst from the amount they got. My baby had somehow gotten under my bladder and blocked my urethra.

My son was born with severe hypospadias . Behind his scrotum, and his scrotum was not quite formed correctly .when he was born the label on his baby warmer that says “ baby boy “ or baby girl “ said “ baby unknown “ . ;( they tested him genetically to see if he was a boy or girl. He was a boy, he had a tiny boy part but I think because the scrotum looked abnormal they wanted to make sure. This was 30 years ago, but from what I remember, I took him to endocrinologist where he got injections to grow his little part quicker then in the first surgery the that extra skin on his part was used to make him a new urethra. He had to have 2 surgeries in his first year of life to correct his problem, then he had to see the surgeon to follow up on him until he was about 17. To make sure he was still urinating ok. He also had a sacral dimple that was repaired . My son is 29 now and all is good thanks to amazing doctors !

I love this health education. Not only is this a fairly rare condition, but it’s also considered as “untouchable” because it includes the male reproductive organ

I'm confused on how the nurses didn't realize he had this defect, usually you can clearly see it from the outside.

I don't understand why he wouldn't stop the nurses and tell them he doesn't pee from there. He must not of fully understood what a catheter is, which may have been the saddest part of the story, patients undergoing a treatment they don't understand so can't even tell them why it's not working.

I’ve been treated for utis for years without actually having one. Thought my kidneys were failing. Finally ended up in the ER, found out with a simple ct scan that my bladder wall is thickening. Waiting to see a urologist to find out if it’s cancer or cystitis. If you read this and you believe in something, think/ pray for me. I am 23, and the issues started when I was 19. I’m scared

My Grandfather died with a severe UTI, in care. Had not passed urine/had effective catheterisation for- I don't know how many- days. We were not told this was happening at any point.

How was that never detected when he was a young boy?! I worked on a children’s ward 36 years ago when this was a common operation on very young boys!

reminded me of when I couldn't pee a year ago because I was paralyzed with TB Spine and didn't know. Got into the emergency at 10:30am but even after 5 Drs they didn't seem to bother and had me in a wheelchair, sitting in the normal waiting area till midnight and still didn't do anything other than injecting me with lots of painkillers and steroid..

their reasons were that 2 MRI machines were down and a little after midnight, I was transferred to another hospital and only around 5:00am the next day, only I was relieved of my bladder by the 6th Dr at another hospital. 😢
